AND OTHER DESCENTS OF FAIIILIES NOT IN THE VISITATION.
EDITED BY
GEOllGE JOHN ARMYTAGE, F.S.A.,
UONORARV SECRETARY TO THE SOCIETY.
LONDON:
1S70.
At a Meeting of the Council of the ILiELEiAN Society, hehl of 8, Danes
Inn, London, W.C., on the 22nd day of June, 1870, the Hon. Henry Eoper-
Cdezon in the Chair, it ivas resolved that —
"The Visitation of Eotland in 1G18, to he edited by the Honorary
Secretary, he the Second P^Mication for the Present Year."
Prcfarr.
Op the small county of Rutland there are but two Visitations^ viz. one made
in the year 1618, and the other in 1681-2.
The original of the first of these is in the College of Arms (marked C. 14),
r\ where there is also a copy with additions by Vincent. There are also copies
in the British Museum, as mentioned below. The other Visitation (viz. that
, of 1681-2) is in the College of Arms (marked K. 1.). Of this, it is believed,
N^ there is no other copy out of that College.
\ The following volume contains the Visitation of 1618, with additions, and
V\. I is compiled from the manuscripts in the British Museum that relate to that
>ii Visitation. The general text is taken from Harl. MS. 1558. The arms in
•V that MS. are tricked by Richard Munday, and the descents are considerably
V^ extended beyond the period of the Visitation. The order of the pedigrees is
^^i^^t^l^sn from the Harl. MS. 1094, which is the same order as that in the Col-
^ lege of Arms. The descents after page 26 are, however, not contained in
^ this last-named MS., but are entirely supplied from the MS. 1558, and are
probably copied from the additions made by Vincent in his own MS., now
preserved in the College of Arms, as mentioned above.
The Visitation of Rutland in the Harl. MS. 1094 is written and the arms
tricked by John Withie, and commences at page 230 of that MS.
For the convenience of the members of this Society, a list of the pedigrees
in the Visitation of 1681 is here appended.

T7w Council has selected the Visitation of Oxford in 1574 and 1G34
to follow that of Rutland.
Import for the ^har 1869-70.
On the 27tli of March, 1869, two Members of the Society's Council
invited several of their friends and correspondents to assist in the
formation of a Society, having for its special object the publication
of the Heralds' Visitations of C(niii1it's and other important Ge-
nealogical Manuscripts. By the 'JMli of May, fifty-eight persons
signified their wilHugness toVo-upc i-aic in tlic establishment of such
a Society, and at a Special Meeting held on that day at 8, Danes
Inn, the Honourable Henet Eopee-Cukzon in the Chair, the Offi-
cers of the Society were appointed and the Eules drawn out. The
success that the Society met with was so great, that by the 28th of
July no fewer than one hundred !Mcinl)ers had joined, aud from that
time to the present this number has been gradually increasing, so
that now it exceeds one hundred and seventy Members.
This great success may be attributed to the exertions of the
several Members of the Council, and to the literary status of many
of the original Members.
The Society has already published and distributed ' The Heraldic
Visitation of London, taken by Robert Cooke, Clarenceux, in 1508,'
edited by Joseph Jackson Howard, F.S.A., and Geoege J. Aemt-
TAGE, F.S.A.
Camden's ' Visitation of Leicestershire in 1619,' edited by John
Fetheeston, F.S.A., will be ready for circulation in about a fort-
night. This is a large work, and contains 207 pages of pedigree
matter only. It will also include facsimiles of several of the signa-
tures ot the heads of families who entered their pedigrees at that
Visitation, together with a very elaliorate armorial and general index.
Sir Geoege F. Duckett, Bart., F.S. A., has offered to edit a Visita-
tion for the Society ; and the ' Visitation of Nottingham,' to be edited
by G. W. Marshall, Esq., LL.M., is ready for the press ; and
the three Oxfordshire Visitations are now being prepared by Mr.
William Henkt Tuener, of Oxford.
The Society is now in a position to jiviiit Two Volumes a year, and
it is hoped that the additiiui ni' niintlu'r hundred Members will
enable a third volume to lu' |iiiMi>li(il ; and it is believed that the
issue of Three Volumes in i^'tuni for the Guinea Subscription will
place the Society in the foremost ranks of such Associations of this
country.
The especial thanks of the Members are due to the Council of
the Surrey Archsological Society for so courteously placing their
Meeting-room at the disposal of the Harleiiin Council. Arrange-
ments are now being made for the payment of a few pounds per
annum to the Surrey Society, as it is considered desirable that this
Society shall have a recognized place of meeting.
